10 more Caesar 8×8 howitzers ordered from the Czech Republic

PRAGUE ($1=22.79 Czech Korunas) — The Czech Republic ordered ten more 155mm Caesar 8×8 self-propelled artillery mounts from the French company Nexter. With this new batch, already signed by its Ministry of Defense, the Central European country adds to the 62 systems of this type ordered so far, after three years ago it already signed the acquisition of 52 units mounted on locally produced Tatra trucks.

The first four Czech Caesars of the joint order were agreed to be manufactured in France, by the original developer, while the rest were the responsibility of the companies in the client country responsible for its assembly.

Self-propelled guns 155×52 mm are mounted in the case of trucks of the local brand Tatra Trucks. These are the same Czech platforms that were also chosen for the 19 Caesar 8x8s purchased from Denmark.

Other local companies are also involved in the Czech contract, such as CSG Group, whose subsidiary Excalibur Army has been designated to assemble the system. Tatra Defense Vehicles company, in turn, is responsible for the production of the armored cabins of the vehicles. Retia is the integrator of the equipment related to the fire control system, and STV, together with Explosia, provides the ammunition, among other local implications. Nexter, of France, will equip these weapons with special ammunition.

The Caesars will replace the DANA 8×8 self-propelled howitzers equipped with 152 mm guns. The total value of Caesars acquired from the Czech Republic reaches 425 million euros, according to information published by Army Recognition.

According to the manufacturer, each Caesar 8×8 carries 36 rounds along with its barrel, “giving it a long ammunition range.” The system takes just three minutes to complete, “compared to ten for its fully automated competitors.” It also highlights “lower fuel consumption compared to heavy chain howitzers, which is a major advantage in high-intensity combat configurations where the fluidity of logistical supplies is threatened by long-range artillery.”

Caesar’s developer, Nexter, is the leading French ground defense company and the third-largest European player in the munitions sector. It is currently part of the KNDS group, where it shares ownership with Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann [KMW].
