Historical Significance: National Day
Kuwait’s National Day annually celebrates the end of British protection, officially granted on June 19, 1961. During this crucial moment, Kuwait emerged as a fully independent country. However, due to intense summer heat, the festivities were moved to February 25 to mark the ascension of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah in 1950. Known as the “Father of Independence,” Sheikh Abdullah’s reign is revered for the alignment of this date with the traditional values and progressive strides that characterized his leadership.

Kuwait’s Liberation Day falls on February 26, recalling the end of Iraqi occupation in 1991 during the Gulf War. The six-month occupation ended on this day thanks to a decisive international military coalition. Liberation Day is a poignant reminder of Kuwait’s resilience and the importance of international solidarity in the face of adversity.
