Autumn Fish Harvests Commence in South Bohemia with Traditional Fishing Craft and Fresh Fish Tastings
The picturesque South Bohemian region is currently witnessing the commencement of the autumn fish harvests on hundreds of ponds. Fishermen, clad in rubber suits and tall boots, utilize extensive nets to collect tons of fish. The season began with the harvest of Rožmberk, the largest Czech pond, on October 13, and the activities will continue throughout the entire region until the second half of November. The upcoming harvest at the Svět pond in Třeboň will also be a significant event this year, taking place from November 6 to 8.
Visitors can look forward to witnessing traditional fishing techniques and participating in associated programs, as well as enjoying tastings of fresh fish specialties during this period.
Třeboň fishermen have planned to harvest approximately eighty tons of market fish, including pikes, zanders, grass carps, and perches, from dozens of ponds in the South Bohemian region during October and November. They also have a target of catching around fifty tons of Christmas carp. Importantly, they do not intend to raise prices compared to the previous year, keeping the rate at 119 Czech korunas per kilogram of carp.
The Bezdrev pond in Hluboká nad Vltavou, the second-largest pond in the Czech Republic, will be the site of fish harvesting on the national holiday, October 28. The event will feature music on the dam, and the city will provide free bus transportation for the occasion. Additionally, the National Agricultural Museum in Ohrada will host Fisherman’s Day, with several Hluboká restaurants offering unique fish menus from October 25 to 29, as part of a week of fish specialties.
Towards the end of October, fishermen will also carry out harvests at the Dvořiště pond in Českobudějovicko, and in November, they will move to various locations such as Dívčice, Blatec pond, and Sedlec, Vlhavský pond. A comprehensive overview of the fish harvests taking place in South Bohemia can be found at www.jiznicechy.cz.
The autumn fish harvests in South Bohemia are a cherished tradition that brings together local communities and visitors to celebrate the region’s rich fishing heritage while providing fresh and locally sourced fish to markets and restaurants.
