Camp in Jindřichův Hradec region ended early due to children’s health problems

On Monday, a summer camp with more than 40 children ended prematurely in the Jindřichův Hradec region. The reason was their health problems. The participants vomited and had diarrhea. Kvetoslava Kotrbová, director of the South Bohemian regional hygiene station, informed journalists in a press release.

“The leader of a recovery event near Jindřichův Hradec reported to us the occurrence of health problems in several camp participants. It was supposed to be short-term overnight vomiting and diarrhea. There were 55 people at the camp, 42 children,” Kotrbová said.

Seven children were in isolation today, but the course of their illness was not severe, she added.

Hygienists found no defects during the inspection. “We have taken biological material for further examination from the kitchen staff and one of the sick children, and we are waiting for the results. The camp was due to end properly on Saturday, and in the afternoon, the camp manager informed us that the operator had closed the camp,” Kotrbová said.

Over the summer, nearly three hundred residential camps will be held in southern Bohemia. More than 33,000 children will attend them.

“I would like to appeal, in connection with the expected tropical weather, that organizers of recovery events take into account the risks that high temperatures and intense sunshine bring to children when planning activities at camps,” said Marie Nosková, director of the Department of Hygiene of Children and Adolescents at the South Bohemian Hygiene Station.

According to her, there is a risk of heatstroke and heatstroke in particular, and children’s drinking regime and the time they spend in direct sunlight should be adapted to the hot weather.
