Czech Republic – October 18, 2023 – The onset of the heating season brings to light the importance of proper chimney and furnace maintenance. Firefighters and insurers in the Czech Republic are warning homeowners not to underestimate the upkeep of their chimneys, as neglect can lead to devastating fires and other consequences.

The failure to maintain a chimney can result in fires, causing extensive property damage, carbon monoxide poisoning, and toxic emissions from gas appliances. Furthermore, insurance companies may reduce claim payouts in cases where inadequate chimney care is evident.

In a report by ČSOB Insurance Company, it is revealed that chimney neglect led to 1,245 fires. Homeowners who disregard or underestimate the significance of scheduling an annual chimney sweep risk facing substantial fines from the Fire and Rescue Service. These fines can range from thousands of Czech koruna for individuals to up to 100,000 CZK for legal entities and self-employed individuals.

Chimney inspections should be conducted at least once a year, with additional checks required depending on usage frequency. As the heating season begins, increased chimney utilization heightens the risk of fires, especially among those who ignore regulatory obligations outlined in the Chimney Decree. Proper chimney maintenance serves as a preventive measure, ensuring the safety of residents and property.

In 1,118 cases last year, fires occurred due to soot ignition, a natural byproduct of combustion. The quality of fuels burned and the moisture content of wood significantly contribute to soot formation. The inclusion of substances that should not be burned, such as plastics, textiles, or beverage packaging, can also lead to soot accumulation. Chimney fires caused 66 million CZK in direct damages and injured 28 individuals.

When is Chimney Inspection Necessary?
