Czech Chief of General Staff Warns of Potential Conflict with Russia, Emphasizes Need for Deterrence and Support for Ukraine

Czech Chief of General Staff Karel Rehka delivered a stark assessment today at the conference in Prague titled “Ready to Fight?” stating that while a war with Russia is not imminent, it remains a plausible scenario. Rehka emphasized that only through effective deterrence can Europe hope to prevent such a conflict, urging a realistic demonstration of the continent’s ability and willingness to defend itself.

Highlighting the importance of supporting Ukraine, which has been under Russian invasion since February 2022, Rehka underscored that Russia has shifted toward a war economy and production, taking steps to circumvent sanctions through Central Asia and the Caucasus. He expressed concern over Moscow’s use of nuclear deterrence and deliberate destabilization of regions, emphasizing Russia’s long-standing efforts to undermine Western unity and challenge democratic institutions.

Rehka acknowledged the ongoing transformation of the Russian military in Ukraine, now operating as a wartime army with intensified preparation for a prolonged conflict. He dismissed criticism of allegedly spreading fear, stating that it is the duty of soldiers to convey the reality and emphasize the need for preparedness and resilience within society.

The general stressed that the potential for conflict cannot be averted through agreements but requires a strong deterrent message, ensuring that Russia perceives the futility of pursuing aggression. He suggested that a war with Russia, while currently not likely, could arise from unintended escalation or a belief by an adversary that conflict is inevitable.

In this context, Rehka urged continued support for Ukraine, praising the nation’s determination and courage in defending itself. He highlighted the positive outcome of increased unity within the European Union during the conflict, surprising both Russia and the Union itself. Ultimately, Rehka concluded that an open discourse about threats and proactive measures, including education and training, are crucial for building a resilient society in the face of potential geopolitical challenges.
