Czech Interior Minister Invests in Accommodation Facility to Boost Police Recruitment
Czech Minister of the Interior, Vít Rakušan (STAN), is taking significant steps to make working for the Czech police more appealing by acquiring a new accommodation facility in Prague’s Kunratice district. The state purchased the building for 400 million Czech korunas, with the aim of enhancing the attractiveness of police service. The property, previously operated as a more upscale version of university dormitories, has been in use for the past eleven years, particularly catering to international students.
The acquisition of the building in Prague’s Kunratice district was finalized in May and is situated within the university dormitory complex in Jižní Město, adjacent to the University of Economics.
Built in the 1980s, the facility underwent significant renovations in 2012. It was operated by Apartman Student, owned by entrepreneurs Jana and Bohumil Kopecký, offering a higher level of comfort primarily to foreign students.
The purchase price exceeded the expert appraisal, which valued the building at 380 million Czech korunas, with the state paying an additional 20 million korunas. Minister Vít Rakušan explained that the decision to acquire the facility was driven by a desire to secure accommodation capacity for the police, as no other suitable state-owned premises were available.
“The price is adequate for the comfort we provide, and it is an investment in the future,” Minister Rakušan emphasized. The move is part of the broader strategy to make careers in the police force more attractive and accommodating.
The decision to invest in this accommodation facility was also influenced by the inability to identify an alternative property within the state’s existing inventory that met the required criteria.
With 125 rooms and 286 beds, the accommodation facility boasts modern amenities, including a ground-floor shop, a laundry room, and a gym. The proximity of the University of Chemical Technology’s canteen ensures convenient dining options for occupants.
By acquiring this accommodation facility, the Czech Ministry of the Interior aims to enhance the overall experience for police personnel and create a more welcoming environment for those considering a career in law enforcement.
