Czech Republic Meteorologists Warn of Low Temperatures and Frost Damage to Vegetation
On May 4th, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) issued a warning about low temperatures that could cause significant damage to vegetation in the Czech Republic. Meteorologists warned that frosty conditions could be experienced in most areas on Thursday morning, with ground frost expected to range between -1 to -5°C, posing a risk to vegetable crops, particularly potatoes. The warning was in effect from midnight until 8:00 AM and applied to all regions except South Moravian and parts of Zlín and Olomouc.
Farmers were urged to take precautions to protect their crops from the frost, as the risk of spring frost had not yet passed. Some crops could be damaged from Wednesday night to Thursday, with temperatures potentially dropping to zero in some areas. The most significant risk was to potato growers, who were advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, such as covering plants, providing heat, and using windbreaks to minimize the risk of crop damage.
During the day, temperatures were expected to rise between 15 to 19°C, with mainly clear to partly cloudy skies. However, the cloudiness was expected to increase gradually from the west throughout the day. The temperature contrast between day and night could pose a risk to farmers, especially those in the process of planting their crops.
The ČHMÚ reminded farmers that the risk of frost and other weather hazards could not be entirely predicted, and it was crucial to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Farmers were advised to monitor the weather forecasts and adjust their work schedules accordingly. Using protective measures like covering plants, providing heat, and using windbreaks could also minimize the risk of crop damage.
Frost damage can have a significant impact on crop yields, resulting in losses for farmers and affecting food supplies. Therefore, it is essential for farmers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their crops from weather hazards. Weather warnings from meteorological agencies like ČHMÚ can help farmers prepare for adverse weather conditions and minimize the risk of crop damage, ultimately protecting both their livelihoods and the food supply.
