Czech Republic Records Hot Day on September 9, 2023, with Nine Stations Breaking Temperature Records
On September 9, 2023, the Czech Republic experienced an exceptionally hot day, with temperature records shattered at nine out of 163 meteorological stations that have been in operation for at least 30 years. The mercury soared to at least 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) at five different locations, including the hottest spot in Prague-Komořany, which reached a high of 30.4 degrees Celsius. Pavel Borovička from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) confirmed that while it was a scorching day, it did not break the all-time record for this station.
The heatwave made its presence felt in various parts of the country, with temperatures surpassing 30 degrees Celsius in Doksany, Plzeň-Bolevce, Dobřichovice, and Tuhani. While none of these locations established new records for September 9th, the heat was certainly intense.
Even mountainous regions did not escape the grasp of the sweltering heat, with Smolnice in Lounsko registering a new high of 28.8 degrees Celsius (83.8 degrees Fahrenheit), and Horská Kvilda also setting a new record at 25.5 degrees Celsius (77.9 degrees Fahrenheit). In comparison, the temperature at Labské boudě remained a relatively warm 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit).
The persistently hot summer weather, characterized by temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, is expected to continue until Tuesday, after which a gradual cooldown is anticipated. Meteorologists are forecasting clear conditions next weekend, with maximum temperatures gradually rising to 27 degrees Celsius (80.6 degrees Fahrenheit), indicating that the warm weather may persist for some time.
The record-breaking temperatures underscore the unusual and extreme weather patterns that have become increasingly prevalent in various parts of the world. In the Czech Republic, such heatwaves have prompted officials and residents to take measures to stay safe and cool during periods of scorching weather.
