Czech Republic’s Supreme Court Approves Construction of Metro D Line in Prague

The Czech Republic’s Supreme Administrative Court has given the green light to the construction of the country’s newest metro line, Metro D. This decision marks a significant milestone for the project, which has faced legal challenges and delays.

Metro D will connect Prague’s Pankrác area with the city’s southern suburbs, providing a crucial transport link. Despite legal disputes, the court’s ruling in favor of the project means that the construction of the first section, running between Pankrác and Olbrachtova stations, can proceed. This section includes a transfer hub with the existing Metro C line, making it a complex phase of the project. The entire Metro D line, once completed, will stretch from Písnice in the south to Náměstí Míru in central Prague.

The court’s decision also dismissed claims by opponents of the project that city officials had shown bias in favor of the project and that construction had begun before obtaining all necessary permits.

The new metro line has garnered support from various quarters, including the city’s transport authority, which has advocated for the line to alleviate congestion on roads and the existing transport network. Besides its transportation benefits, the project is expected to have positive economic impacts, generating jobs and boosting local businesses.

Although the project has overcome this significant legal hurdle, it still faces challenges. The country’s antitrust authority recently canceled the second phase tender of the project. Despite this setback, the transport authority remains committed to the project and will need to re-tender the work for the next phase. In the meantime, construction will continue on the line’s first phase.

Once completed, Metro D is poised to provide a vital and efficient transport solution for Prague, addressing congestion issues on roads and within the existing public transport system. This milestone reflects the progress made despite challenges and underscores the importance of enhancing urban transportation networks for the city’s residents and visitors.
