Czechia’s law on stores during national holidays: What you need to know for the Easter weekend

Czechia’s upcoming long weekend: What to expect in terms of store closures

Czechia, like many other countries around the world, has designated Good Friday and Easter Monday as official non-working days. This means that people in the country can take a four-day break from work, from April 7 to 10. However, it’s important to note that supermarkets will be closed on Easter Monday, so people need to plan ahead for their grocery needs.

This closure is due to a law introduced in October 2016, prohibiting stores larger than 200 square meters from operating on certain national holidays, including Easter Monday. The law was implemented to allow supermarket employees to spend holidays with their families, like everyone else.

On the other hand, Good Friday, which falls on April 7, 2023, is not covered by this law. Thus, all stores, including supermarkets, will operate as usual on that day, as well as on Saturday and Sunday.

It’s worth noting that this law only applies to large stores, not small businesses. Smaller grocery stores, as well as convenience stores and gas stations, may remain open during Easter Monday. However, it’s best to double-check with individual businesses for their operating hours during the holiday.

It’s also important to keep in mind that the law applies to all large stores, not just grocery stores. This means that shopping centers and malls with larger stores will also be closed on Easter Monday.

In conclusion, Czechia’s upcoming long weekend is an excellent opportunity for people to relax and spend time with their loved ones. However, it’s crucial to plan ahead for any necessary grocery shopping, as supermarkets will be closed on Easter Monday. Additionally, people need to be aware of the closures of larger stores, including shopping centers and malls, during this holiday.
