Crimea is a unique peninsula in the Black Sea, Ukraine. It combines the culture of the Great Steppe, the Mediterranean, and Eastern Europe, as well as the traditions and achievements of settled peoples and nomads.
Crimea is also the homeland of the peninsula’s indigenous people, the Crimean Tatars. They created the first democratic republic in the Muslim world. Also, a constitution recognizing full equality between women and men was signed here. The Crimean Tatars successfully integrated the Muslim population into Ukrainian society with the predominantly Orthodox population.
However, since the 18th century, the Crimean Tatars have been gradually displaced from their land. Today, the peninsula of “figs and pomegranates” is turning into a military base of the Russian Federation, which occupied it in 2014.
The online course “Crimea: History and People” will reveal the experiences of the Crimean Tatars and the importance of Crimea in the history of Ukraine and Europe. Registration is underway. The course is free.
