Eurowings is planning a busy 2023 summer schedule from its base in the Czech Republic.

One year after establishing services from Prague, Eurowings has announced that its project has been a resounding success. Starting next summer, the carrier is adding three more routes and upping frequencies on key markets to meet demand. Let’s find out more about this expansion.

18 routes on offer next summer

Just over a year after launching its base in Prague, Eurowings is doubling down for next summer. In a statement, the carrier announced plans to add flights to Geneva, Rhodes, and Corfu to those traveling for business or hoping to get some much-needed vacation time in summer 2023.

The most popular destinations out of Prague are getting a frequency boost as well. Copenhagen, the busiest route, will now be served 11 times weekly. It’s Spain that will see increases across the board too, with 4x weekly flights to Malaga and 3x weekly to Alicante. Athens will also be served 3x weekly and Stockholm 6x weekly from next summer onward. Overall, Eurowings is increasing its network to 18 routes.

This winter, Eurowings has seen strong demand for flights to Barcelona, Rome, and Stockholm, showing that the base can support traffic in the off-season as well. Clearly, Eurowings does not regret its decision to enter the Czech market.

Gamble paid off

In a statement this week, Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Prague base by saying,

 

“Prague and Eurowings are a match. We dared to take the step to the Czech Republic in a still very uncertain situation, but it is becoming more and more clear that people all over Europe now want to travel again after the Corona restrictions. Our concept as a value airline is also working: Czechs like to fly cheaply, but they also value our additional services such as flexible rebooking up to 40 minutes before departure or our Priority Service.” 

While Prague may have been a riskier call during the pandemic, the Czech city is a popular tourist destination as well, bringing in over six million visitors in 2019. Add to this strong demand from the local population and Eurowings finds itself entering a busy yet growing commercial market. 

The feeling of success was certainly mutual on the ground, with Jaroslav Filip, Director of Aviation Business at Prague Airport noting,

 

“In the summer, Eurowings brought many guests to popular destinations and also expanded the offer in the winter. After the first year, it is clear that this is a successful cooperation, which we will continue to expand in the future.”

Eurowings’ market

Eurowings is the budget arm of the Lufthansa Group, primarily operating the Airbus A320 family. With a fleet of 100 aircraft, consisting of 36 A319s, 56 A320ceos, six A320neos, and two wet-leased Boeing 737-800s, the carrier has certainly made a mark across its home market. Eurowings is notable for its subsidiaries as well, with a long-haul arm known as Discover, which flies to some interesting destinations, and an upcoming subsidiary in Malta (but only for registration purposes).
