Exceptional success for Czech tennis at this year’s Wimbledon Championships

Representatives of Czech tennis achieved extraordinary successes at this year’s Wimbledon Championships organised by the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club in London.

On Saturday 15 July, Markéta Vondroušová defeated Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the women’s singles final to become the third Czech women’s champion at Wimbledon after Jana Novotná and Petra Kvitová. Markéta Voundroušová became the first unseeded player in the Open era to achieve this feat, following in the footsteps of American Billie Jean King, who won Wimbledon as an unseeded player in 1963.

Perhaps an even more successful day for the Czech team came on Sunday 16 July, when Barbora Strýcová and her partner – Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei – won the women’s doubles final against the third-seeded Belgian-Australian pair of Elise Mertens and Storm Hunter.

The Czechs also celebrated victories in the junior doubles as the Czech pair of Alena Kovačková and Laura Samsonová defeated the home team of Hannah Klugman and Isabelle Lacy in the girls’ final and the Czech-Italian pair of Jakub Filip and Gabrielle Vulpita won the boys’ doubles against the Serbian-French pair of Branko Djuric and Arthur Gea.

The Czech tennis team also reached the final of the girls’s singles, where Nikola Bartůňková lost to American Clervie Ngounoue. The Czech tennis players were also cheered on by Ambassador Marie Chatardová.
