Gas supplies from Russia via Nord Stream 1 resumed

Following regular Nord Stream 1 pipeline maintenance, gas supplies were restored on Thursday morning. A spokesman for the operator, Nord Stream AG, confirmed this to DPA. On Wednesday, the German pipeline network operator, Gascade, informed us that it had registered a reservation for the resumed supplies.

Operations will be at 30 percent of the facility’s capacity so far on Thursday, Klaus Müller, the head of Germany’s network regulator, wrote on Twitter, citing data from Russian state firm Gazprom, the majority shareholder of the pipeline operator.

Nord Stream 1 runs along the bottom of the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany and is the main route for Russian natural gas supplies to the European Union.

The pipeline has been out of service since July 11, and Germany, in particular, has expressed concern that supplies might not resume due to the tense situation between Russia and the West caused by the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops.

Last month, Gazprom cut supplies through the pipeline by about 40 percent, citing technical problems. Because of sanctions imposed by the West on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, a Russian turbine serviced by Siemens Energy, a German company vital to Nord Stream 1, could not return from Canada in time.
