Maimonides byl velice plodným autorem a šíře jeho znalostí je skutečně udivující. Mezi jeho nejvýznamnější díla patří halachický kodex Mišne Tora a filosofický spis More nevuchim (Průvodce tápajících), jeden z nejdůležitějších textů židovské filosofie. Průvodce tápajících ovlivnil generace nejen židovských myslitelů a ve svých dílech jej zmiňuje mimo jiné i Sv. Tomáš Akvinský. Význam Mošeho ben Majmona dokládá slavné rčení:

ממשה עד משה לא קם כמשה

Od Mošeho (tj. biblický Mojžíš) po Mošeho (tj. Maimonides) nebyl nikdo jako Moše.

WE’RE CELEBRATING 75: THIS TIME WITH MAIMONIDES (AND LEMON CAKE, WHICH ALLEGEDLY HE LIKED VERY MUCH)

The third personality we bring to you is Moshe ben Maimon, one of the greatest Jewish thinkers (Hebrew משה בן מימון, also known under the acronym Rambam = 𝗥abbi 𝗠oshe 𝗕en 𝗠aimon, or in European languages as Maimonides). He was born around this time 885 years ago, i.e. in 1138 in Córdoba, Andalusia. Maimonides’ family had to leave the relatively tolerant environment of Muslim Andalusia following the conquest by the Almohads in the mid-12th century. They took refuge in Fez, North Africa, but the situation there was not much better.

After a harrowing journey across the stormy Mediterranean Sea, Rambam finally arrived at the port of Akko on May 16, 1165 and entered the Holy Land for the first time. From there, he went to Jerusalem and subsequently also visited the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron.

Maimonides later moved to the Egyptian Fustat, where he worked first as a merchant and later as a physician to Sultan Saladin himself. At the same time, he held the position of head of the Egyptian Jewish community.

Maimonides died in 1204 in Egypt, but was buried in Tiberias in Galilee.

“FROM MOSES TO MOSES THERE WAS NO ONE LIKE MOSES”

Maimonides was a very prolific author and the breadth of his knowledge is truly astonishing. Among his most important works are the halachic codex Mishneh Torah and the philosophical treatise Moreh Nevukhim (The Guide for the Perplexed), one of the most important texts of Jewish philosophy. This work influenced generations not only of Jewish thinkers, and in his works he is mentioned by St. Thomas Aquinas. The importance of Moshe ben Maimon is evidenced by the famous saying:

ממשה עד משה לא קם כמשה

From Moshe (i.e. the biblical Moses) to Moshe (i.e. Maimonides) there was no one like Moshe.
