Jak Teherán buduje vliv stovky kilometrů od svých hranic

Když loni na podzim propukla válka mezi Izraelem a Hamásem, Írán vystoupil s hrozbou, která tehdy působila jako prázdné gesto: pokud Izrael neustoupí z Gazy, Teherán zablokuje Gibraltarský průliv – klíčovou námořní tepnu mezi Afrikou a Evropou. Jenže tato hrozba, která tehdy působila nerealisticky, začíná dostávat konkrétnější obrysy. A ukazuje se, že íránský vliv sahá mnohem dál, než si většina světa připouští – až do západní části severní Afriky.

Nečekané spojení: Írán, Hizballáh a Fronta Polisario

Podle nových zjištění amerického deníku The Washington Post vycvičil Hizballáh – Iránem podporovaná militantní organizace z Libanonu – bojovníky Fronty Polisario, separatistické skupiny usilující o nezávislost Západní Sahary na Maroku. Někteří z těchto bojovníků se prý aktuálně nacházejí i v Sýrii, kde bojují na straně režimu Bašára al-Asada, dalšího íránského spojence.

Tohle partnerství ukazuje, jak efektivně Teherán využívá různé ozbrojené skupiny jako své „zástupce“ – proxy síly – po celém regionu.

Spojení mezi Íránem, Hizballáhem a Polisariem ale není úplnou novinkou.

Už v roce 2018 Maroko obvinilo Teherán z podpory separatistů – včetně dodávek raket přes libanonský Hizballáh a za souhlasu íránské ambasády v Alžíru. Reakcí Rabatu bylo přerušení diplomatických styků s Teheránem.

V roce 2022 zástupce Fronty Polisario oznámil, že Írán dodá skupině útočné drony. Brzy poté Maroko předložilo OSN foto-důkazy, že Írán a Hizballáh skutečně dodávají Polisariu moderní zbraně – včetně právě bezpilotních letounů.

Alžírsko jako hlavní opora Polisaria

Klíčovým hráčem v této mozaice je Alžírsko. To nejen že poskytuje Polisariu vojenskou a finanční podporu, ale dává jeho členům pasy a hostí jejich vedení v táborech u hranic s Marokem. Zdejší oblast Tindúf se podle bezpečnostních analytiků v posledních letech proměnila v semeniště extremistických organizací.

Například nechvalně známý džihádista Adnan Abu al-Walid al-Sahrawi, bývalý emír Islámského státu v oblasti Sahelu, měl dříve vysokou pozici právě ve Frontě Polisario. Jeho příběh ukazuje, jak tenká může být hranice mezi separatistickým bojem a mezinárodním terorismem.

Znepokojivá je i situace uvnitř uprchlických táborů

Podle ženevských nevládních organizací zde Polisario brání dětem v dokončení školní docházky – místo toho jsou nuceny k vojenskému výcviku. Zprávy hovoří o systematickém zneužívání tisíců nezletilých k politickým i bojovým účelům.

USA zvažuje tvrdší postoj

Ve Spojených státech sílí hlasy, že by Washington měl Frontu Polisario oficiálně označit za teroristickou organizaci. Zároveň se zvažuje otevření amerického konzulátu v Dachle – městě na území Západní Sahary – jako jasné potvrzení podpory marocké svrchovanosti.

Z pohledu USA není jen v sázce stabilita regionu, ale i samotné bezpečnostní zájmy Západu. Íránská síť spojenců a ozbrojených skupin už dávno přesahuje hranice Blízkého východu – a severní Afrika se postupně stává její další frontovou linií.

How Tehran Builds Influence Hundreds of Kilometers from Its Borders

When the war between Israel and Hamas broke out last fall, Iran issued a threat that seemed like an empty gesture at the time: if Israel did not withdraw from Gaza, Tehran would block the Strait of Gibraltar – a key maritime artery between Africa and Europe. However, what once seemed unrealistic is now taking a more concrete shape. It’s becoming clear that Iranian influence reaches much farther than most of the world is willing to admit – all the way to the western part of North Africa.

An Unexpected Alliance: Iran, Hezbollah, and the Polisario Front

According to new findings by the American newspaper The Washington Post, Hezbollah – the Iran-backed militant organization from Lebanon – has trained fighters of the Polisario Front, a separatist group seeking independence for Western Sahara from Morocco. Some of these fighters are reportedly now in Syria, fighting on the side of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, another Iranian ally.

This partnership demonstrates how effectively Tehran uses various armed groups as its “proxies” throughout the region.

However, the connection between Iran, Hezbollah, and the Polisario is not entirely new.

As early as 2018, Morocco accused Tehran of supporting the separatists – including supplying missiles via Lebanese Hezbollah, with the approval of the Iranian embassy in Algiers. In response, Rabat severed diplomatic ties with Tehran.

In 2022, a Polisario representative announced that Iran would supply the group with attack drones. Soon after, Morocco submitted photo evidence to the UN showing that Iran and Hezbollah were indeed delivering modern weapons – including unmanned aerial vehicles – to the Polisario.

Algeria as Polisario’s Main Backer

A key player in this web is Algeria. Not only does it provide military and financial support to the Polisario, it also issues them passports and hosts their leadership in camps near the Moroccan border. According to security analysts, the Tindouf area has, in recent years, become a breeding ground for extremist organizations.

For example, the infamous jihadist Adnan Abu al-Walid al-Sahrawi, former emir of ISIS in the Sahel region, once held a senior position in the Polisario Front. His story illustrates just how thin the line can be between separatist struggle and international terrorism.

Disturbing Conditions Inside the Refugee Camps

According to Geneva-based NGOs, the Polisario prevents children in these camps from completing their education – instead forcing them into military training. Reports speak of the systematic abuse of thousands of minors for both political and combat purposes.

The U.S. Considers a Tougher Stance

In the United States, voices are growing louder that Washington should officially designate the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization. At the same time, the opening of a U.S. consulate in Dakhla – a city in Western Sahara – is being considered as a clear statement of support for Moroccan sovereignty.

From the U.S. perspective, what’s at stake is not only regional stability but also the security interests of the West itself. Iran’s network of allies and armed groups has long extended beyond the Middle East – and North Africa is steadily becoming its next frontline.
