Jakub and Eliška: The Top Baby Names in the Czech Republic for 2022

The Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) has unveiled the most popular baby names chosen by parents in the Czech Republic for the year 2022. In this annual report, the top two names for both boys and girls remained consistent with previous years, showcasing a blend of traditional and contemporary naming preferences.

Boys:

  1. Jakub – Jakub has retained its position as the most popular name for boys in the Czech Republic for the 12th consecutive year. It first claimed the top spot in 2011.
  2. Jan – Jan, which held the second position last year, has consistently ranked among the top ten most frequently given names for boys since 1950.
  3. Matyáš – In 2022, the third most popular name for boys was Matyáš, a name that has been in the top ten since 2010.

Girls:

  1. Eliška – Eliška continues its reign as the most favored name for newborn girls in the Czech Republic. It has been a consistent favorite among parents.
  2. Anna – Anna claimed the second spot in many regions, and it was the top choice in Prague and the Plzeňský region.
  3. Viktorie – Viktorie emerged as the third most popular name in the Liberecký region.

Regional Variations:

  • Jakub was the top choice for boys in most regions, except for Královéhradecký, where Matyáš was the favorite.
  • Eliška remained the top name for girls in 11 regions, while Anna and Viktorie took the lead in specific areas.

An interesting trend noted in the report is the increase in multi-word names separated by spaces or hyphens. In 1990, less than half a percent of boys and girls had multi-word names. This percentage has now grown to over 4% for boys and nearly 5% for girls in 2022, reflecting a shift towards more unique and expressive naming choices.

Furthermore, the diversity of names has expanded over the years. Since 2010, there have been 29 girls’ and 25 boys’ names in the top 20 rankings. The variety of names reflects the evolving preferences of parents in welcoming their newborns.

In the Czech Republic, the choice of a baby’s name carries cultural and historical significance. The enduring popularity of names like Jakub and Eliška highlights the appreciation for traditional Czech names, while the inclusion of multi-word names reflects modern naming trends.

The report showcases how naming traditions evolve over time, reflecting parents’ diverse and ever-changing preferences as they introduce their newborns into the world.
