Judges of the Court of Justice of the EU for the first time in Czechia

This is the first time the Court has issued a ruling in Czechia. The delegation is led by the President of the Court, Koen Lenaerts, and accompanied by the First Advocate General and eight other judges, including Czech Judge Jan Passer.

On the morning of Monday 20 May 2024, the judges of the Court of Justice met with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Eduard Hulicius, Deputy Minister of Justice Karel Dvořák and Deputy Minister for European Affairs Pavlina Žáková to discuss the current challenges of EU law and European integration.

“The Court’s visits to Member States are an exceptional opportunity to share mutual experiences in the application of EU law across the EU. We are delighted to have been able to organise such a visit in the year in which we are commemorating the 20th anniversary of Czechia’s accession to the EU. The Court of Justice is an extremely important EU institution from which support and stability can be sought even in complicated situations,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Eduard Hulicius.

The event continued with a reception with President Petr Pavel. Minister of Legislation and chairman of the Government Legislative Council also met with the delegation. “I am delighted to welcome to Prague a delegation from the Court of Justice of the EU, led by President Koen Lenaerts. Among the judges was the Czech representative Jan Passer. We talked about the application of EU law or even about my personal experience with the willingness or unwillingness of Czech judges to submit preliminary questions to the CJEU. Thank you for the stimulating discussion,” Minister added.

Afterwards, the delegation of the Court continued to Brno, where they will have a joint programme with representatives of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the Supreme Administrative Court and the City of Brno.

Every two years, a delegation of CJEU judges pays a formal visit to a Member State. A standard part of such a visit is a formal meeting with the highest constitutional officials, representatives of ministries close to the Court and representatives of the highest national courts.
