Liberalization of Czechia’s cannabis laws to be tabled early next year

A bill to liberalize cannabis laws in the Czech Republic will be presented to parliament in January 2022, shortly after the presidential election. National Anti-Drug Coordinator Jindřich Vobořil, of the governing ODS party, announced that the framework for the new legislation will be ready in the new year, when a public consultation is expected to take place between the coalition partners regarding its implementation.

Vobořil explained that working groups are currently trying to identify the right level of regulation that would attract public support to ensure the bill is successful. The first draft of the law could be ready by the end of March, with the bill likely to become law by 2024.

The recreational use of cannabis in Czechia is currently illegal, and possession of up to 10 grams of the drug is an offense that can bring a fine of up to €500.
