Minister Lipavský Spoke at IAEA International Conference on Nuclear Security

On Monday, 20 May 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský delivered a statement on behalf of the European Union and a national statement at the ICONS 2024 international conference organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. The head of Czech diplomacy also met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

Jan Lipavský’s national address at the conferencefocused on the workshop of Working Group 1 on Nuclear Safety of Ukrainian Nuclear Facilities under the President Zelensky’s Peace Plan, which Czechia hosted in Prague in mid-April 2024.

“We received a comprehensive update on the nuclear safety and security situation from Ukrainian officials and experts, with special focus on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Experts discussed how the international community can assist Ukraine in upholding the safety and security of nuclear power plants under its control,” said Jan Lipavský. “We also looked into what steps will have to be taken once Ukraine liberates the Zaporizhzhia power plant,” concluded the head of Czech diplomacy. Participants agreed that a detailed roadmap on technical steps for its relaunch should be elaborated.

On the side of the ICONS conference, minister Lipavský also met with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan. His other meetings included OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Teresa Ribeiro and Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Provisional Technical Secretariat of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
