Prague production of a new film adaptation of the popular French card game Les Loups Garous de Thiercelieux, called The Werewolves of Miller Hollow or just Werewolf in English, has officially commenced, streaming platform Netflix recently revealed.

Shooting in the Czech capital has been underway over the past month, after Netflix France first announced the new project last May. The Werewolves of Miller Hollow stars Jean Reno (Mission: Impossible), Franck Dubosc (Rolling to You), Suzanne Clément (Laurence Anyways), Jonathan Lambert and Grégory Fitoussi (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra).

In Prague, filming has taken place at Barrandov Studio as well as other locations in the city center. Judging by the first images shared by Netflix, the production is taking advantage of the impressive medieval village set originally constructed for the History Channel’s Knightfall at Barrandov Studio and now utilized for other projects.

According to French newspaper Le Parisian, speaking with the the filmmakers, the new movie has a “significant” budget and is intended to be something along the lines of a French version of Jumanji, featuring werewolves, witches, hunters, and other roles from the popular game.

“We could have put teenagers in a Scream-style house, or imagined a game of social massacre in a Haussmann living room… [but] we chose to make it an adventure and family film with humor and, of course, thrills,” director François Uzan told the newspaper.

“We had to respect the philosophy of the game and we needed the green light from its inventors.” The director added that the werewolves would not be created through digital effects, but rather played by stuntmen on set.

Based on the 1980s Russian card game Mafia and first published in France in the early 2000s as Les Loups Garous de Thiercelieux by Philippe des Pallières and Hervé Marly, The Werewolves of Miller Hollow is a social deduction game that pits villagers and other humans against “werewolves” whose identity is hidden from the other players.

The game quickly became a worldwide sensation, leading to multiple versions worldwide. Among those, Ultimate Werewolf and One Night Ultimate Werewolf, both designed by Ted Alspach and published by Bézier Games, were especially popular English-language variants released in the late 2000s.

The new French production of The Werewolves of Miller Hollow shooting in Prague won’t be the first adaptation of the party game to hit the big screen. 2021’s Werewolves Within was based on the same concept, as was a series of Japanese films under the title Werewolf Game.

The Werewolves of Miller Hollow (Les Loups Garous de Thiercelieux) is tentatively scheduled to hit Netflix in late 2024. An official English-language title has yet to be confirmed.
