Occidental Praha Acquires Green Stay Sustainability Certificate

Occidental Praha, a member of the Barceló Hotel Group, is now a proud holder of the Green Stay Initiative certificate awarded by the HRS company. The hotel even received the highest award, the so-called A grade. Various parameters were evaluated in the process of certification. Among the most important criteria were the hotel’s carbon footprint, water consumption, electricity consumption and the hotel’s waste strategy.

Green Stay is an initiative of HRS, part of the international HRS (Hotel Reservation Service) Group operating in the tourism industry. The basis for awarding the Green Stay certificate is an audit based primarily on two main environmental pillars. The first is the measurement of the carbon footprint specifically focused on the hotel industry – the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) and established by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). The second pillar is the evaluation of water usage – Hotel Water Measurement Initiative (HWMI), also adapted to the specifics of the same industry. Occidental Praha entered the Green Stay audit shortly after the launch of this initiative in 2021 and, like other candidate hotels, underwent measurement, collection and reporting of up-to-date data for at least 12 months in order to obtain the title.

Barceló Hotel Group also continues to implement its “Responsible Living Hotels” project, whose mission is to support Occidental Hotels & Resorts brand ‘s perception as one that is focused on responsible and sustainable travel. More than 50 measures have already been implemented in each Occidental hotel to reduce the environmental impact of hotel operations. Obtaining the Green Stay Initiative certificate is a reward for ongoing everyday efforts.

Barceló operates more than 250 hotels with 55,000 rooms in 22 countries. The origins of the family hotel company date back to 1931. The company, which started with passenger transport, has become one of the largest hotel chains in the world within ninety years thanks to the work of three generations of the Barceló family. In the Czech Republic, you can stay at the Barceló Hotel Group hotels at the Occidental Praha, Occidental Praha Five, Occidental Praha Wilson, as well as in South Moravia at the Barceló Brno Palace.
