Olšanská Street in Prague’s Žižkov District to be transformed into a modern urban boulevard

Olšanská Street, one of the longest streets in Prague’s Žižkov district, could soon transform into a modern urban boulevard, featuring four rows of trees, a park, and a pond, according to a conceptual study. The creators of the street’s future appearance have drawn inspiration from various cities around the world, including Brittany in France, Hanover in Germany, Toronto in Canada, Philadelphia and Miami in the USA, as well as the banks of the Loučná River in Litomyšl and the renovated Tyršová Gardens in Pardubice.

Currently, Olšanská Street is perceived as a transit area, with offices and non-residential spaces. The transformation is expected to begin in 2028, and the final form will be decided then. The new street will feature a linear park that will follow the old cemetery wall along the boulevard, with trees providing a pleasant shade high above the heads of pedestrians. Tree groves will be added to cool the park further on hot days, and the specially treated surface will absorb rainwater. There will be a new forest playground and outdoor exercise machines for sports enthusiasts.

The Olšanské náměstí square will also change, with parking lots removed in favor of recreational spaces. The park opposite the Chelčická Elementary School will also be reconstructed, with the restored water surface referencing the history of the former pond. The study includes plans to adjust the space in front of the primary school for children, with a sports hall possibly built on the site of the current tennis courts.

The construction site will be adapted to hold social events such as seasonal markets and other events that support the community life of Žižkov. There will be a café, seating areas, and a pétanque field, while the original entrance to the cemetery, including a florist’s shop, will be restored. A large open area will also be created behind the foreign police building, offering a lawn suitable for picnics, sitting, or playing games. The space will also be adapted to the needs of the new kindergarten.

The transformation of Olšanská Street into a modern urban boulevard will not only improve the look and feel of the area but also provide a new recreational space for residents and visitors to enjoy. It will become a more pedestrian-friendly street, with an emphasis on greenery and public spaces, encouraging people to spend more time outdoors and engage with the community.
