‘Oppenheimer’: Prague tickets now available for only 70mm IMAX screenings in the EU

Presale has launched for tickets to see Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer on the IMAX screen at Cinema City Flora in Prague. As previously reported, the Prague IMAX cinema will be the only one in continental Europe and one of just 25 worldwide to screen the film in full-frame 70mm IMAX, the director’s intended format.

If you want to catch Oppenheimer in IMAX from July 20, you might want to act fast: Prague’s IMAX cinema at is expected to draw cinemagoers from across Europe for the only chance to see the film in its director’s preferred format. Tickets can now be purchased through the Cinema City website.

Screenings of Oppenheimer at Prague’s IMAX cinema will actually start on the night of Wednesday, July 19 with a midnight showing. After that, the IMAX screen at Cinema City Flora will hold four screenings of Oppenheimer per day for at least the next week, through July 26.

Nolan’s film will displace Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One at IMAX cinemas after just one week for the summer blockbuster, something that star Tom Cruise was reportedly unhappy with.

Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy as American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, a key figure in the development of the atomic bomb. An all-star cast features Robert Downey Jr.Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt in supporting roles; Gary Oldman plays U.S. President Harry S. Truman, and Kenneth Branagh portrays Danish physicist and Oppenheimer colleague Niels Bohr.

What’s the big deal about seeing Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX? Director Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema worked with Kodak and Fotokem to invent a brand-new type of black-and-white IMAX film. IMAX film did not previously accommodate for black-and-white, and movies that wanted to utilize the format would have to be digitally retrofitted.

“I very much loved the structural assistance and the aesthetic charge of shifting between color and black and white that I had on Memento,” Nolan told Total Film last year. “[Oppenheimer] was really the perfect time to go back to that device that I loved so much.”

“So we challenged the people at Kodak and Fotokem to make this work for us. And they stepped up. For the first time ever, we were able to shoot IMAX film in black-and-white. And the results were thrilling and extraordinary. As soon as Hoyte and I saw the first tests come in, we just knew that this was a format that we were immediately in love with.”

Tickets to see Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX at Cinema City Flora can now be purchased or reserved through the Cinema City website.
