Petition Calls for the Removal of Barriers Hindering Public Movement in Prague
A new petition has been launched in Prague, drawing attention to the unnecessary barriers that hinder public movement and advocating for improved accessibility for all individuals. The petition, initiated by Ivana Antalová (Pirates), Emilija Rónová, and Aneta Ečeková Maršálková (STAN), aims to eliminate barriers and create a more inclusive environment in public spaces.
The petition, released in late June, underscores the importance of respecting human rights and enhancing accessibility in various public buildings and facilities. It specifically targets locations such as schools, government offices, hospitals, museums, theaters, libraries, churches, and sports arenas. The removal of barriers includes entrances, sidewalks, crossings, and pedestrian zones. Furthermore, the petition emphasizes the need for accessibility in public transportation.
Emilija Rónová highlights that accessibility concerns affect nearly 40 percent of people, including those with permanent or temporary disabilities. The committee behind the petition seeks swift action to eliminate barriers and expresses gratitude to all who support this cause by signing the petition.
Ivana Antalová stresses that removing barriers is a matter of public interest. She emphasizes the significance of public interest, encompassing human rights, dignity, solidarity, and individual freedom. The aim is to ensure that everyone, irrespective of their age, mobility, orientation, or disabilities, can navigate public spaces without hindrances. The removal of barriers is essential for all individuals as they encounter situations throughout different stages of life where such obstacles inconveniences everyone.
The petition further calls for compliance with accessibility standards not only in public buildings but also in private establishments like shops, restaurants, and cinemas. These establishments should make their services accessible to all customers by constructing barrier-free entrances and wider corridors.
In addition to advocating for tangible changes, the petition emphasizes the importance of education and awareness campaigns. Educational programs should inform the public about the significance of accessibility, promoting a more inclusive society.
The petition is currently open for signatures and has already gained support from notable individuals and organizations. Prominent figures such as Václav Krása, chairman of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities, Michal Prager from the initiative “Live under your own,” Luboš Zajíc, president of the United Organization of the Blind and Visually Impaired, and Vojtěch Ryvola, councilor for transportation in Prague 1 (ANO), have pledged their support to this cause.
By highlighting the pressing issue of accessibility and advocating for the removal of barriers, the petition aims to create a more inclusive and equal society for all individuals, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. It calls upon authorities, businesses, and the public to join forces in making Prague a city that fosters accessibility, respect for human rights, and the dignity of every individual.
