PM Fiala and President-Elect Pavel Meet To Discuss Coordination of Foreign Policy Roles

The future coordination of foreign policy between the Czech Republic’s head of state and government was discussed during a one-hour meeting between Prime Minister Petr Fiala and President-elect Petr Pavel. The two agreed that the prime minister would continue to represent the Czech Republic in European bodies, while the president would attend NATO summits. There will be no changes to the current practice and tradition of the division of roles in representing the country abroad.

The PM and the new president also discussed the close cooperation needed between the heads of government and state and agreed on regular monthly meetings to debate all important matters. Pavel’s Presidential Office will also have an authorized representative present at government meetings, continuing the previous tradition.

Fiala expressed his respect for Pavel’s decision to comment on the government’s amendment to lower the extraordinary pension indexation only after his inauguration on 9 March.

The agreement reached between Fiala and Pavel is a positive sign of stability and continuity in the Czech Republic’s foreign policy coordination. The division of roles in representing the country abroad will remain the same, which will help ensure consistency in the Czech Republic’s foreign policy approach.

Furthermore, the regular meetings between the prime minister and the president will facilitate open communication and collaboration between the two offices. This will be particularly important as the country navigates the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other issues such as economic recovery, climate change, and security.

The authorized representative from Pavel’s Presidential Office attending government meetings will ensure that the president is well-informed about the government’s decision-making process and will help facilitate effective coordination between the two offices.

Overall, the agreement reached between Fiala and Pavel is a positive step towards ensuring a smooth transition of power and continuity in the Czech Republic’s foreign policy coordination. By maintaining the current practice and tradition of the division of roles in representing the country abroad, as well as regular communication and collaboration between the prime minister and the president, the Czech Republic will be better equipped to face the challenges ahead.
