Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski on His First Visit to Czechia After the Election of the New Polish Government

On Wednesday 20 March, Minister Lipavský welcomed Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski to the Czernin Palace. This is the second time that he has visited the Czechia as Foreign Minister. In 2008, he signed the founding documents of the Czech-Polish Forum with Karel Schwarzenberg in Prague.

“Today Europe is in danger and we must react to it. Our two countries know very well from history that Russian imperialism will not stop in Ukraine. We regularly hear Russian propagandists calling for the bombing of Prague or Warsaw,” said Minister Lipavský.

In addition to bilateral relations, the Czech and Polish diplomatic chiefs discussed cooperation in security policy. “Together we are working on ways to stop Russian aggression against Ukraine and threats to NATO’s eastern flank. Poland has openly supported our initiative to supply ammunition to Ukraine, which we very much appreciated. I am proud that the Czechia and Poland are at the forefront of support for Ukraine. Moreover, Poland’s role will further increase in the context of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of next year 2025,” said Minister Lipavský, expressing Poland’s all-round support. The Polish Presidency will be an opportunity to raise issues that are key for the Central European region, including security, migration and the future of agriculture.

Poland has a strong position in the common economic trade. It has also been an important partner in energy cooperation for a long time, particularly in the areas of oil, nuclear and gas. In this context, Ministers Lipavský and Sikorski discussed the possibilities for joint action to ensure gas security, including how the extension of the TAL pipeline will lead to a definitive end of Russian oil imports to the Litvínov refinery.
