Prague 3 Renames Koněvova Street to Hartigova Street: A Symbolic Shift Celebrating Local Identity
In a momentous decision, Prague 3 has officially changed the name of Koněvova Street to Hartigova Street, effective October 1st. This renaming ceremony pays tribute to Karel Hartig, the former mayor of Žižkov, marking a significant shift in the neighborhood’s symbolism. For decades, the street bore the name of Ivan Stepanovich Koněv, a Russian military commander and Soviet Marshal. However, the renaming reflects Prague 3’s desire to honor a local patriot and builder of the Žižkov community rather than a politically charged Soviet figure.
The decision to rename Koněvova Street was made by Prague city councilors in June of this year, and the first street signs were replaced on Monday, October 2nd. Alongside the physical changes, residents of Hartigova Street have commenced a period for exchanging their identification cards, reflecting the shift in their official address.
The renaming of the street signifies a break from the ideological past and emphasizes the importance of local identity and community builders. Karel Hartig, known for his patriotic enthusiasm and significant role in the rapid development of Žižkov, was the founder and first mayor of the Žižkov Savings Bank. He played a pivotal role in providing financial support for the neighborhood’s growth and advocated for the construction of a memorial on Vítkov Hill, commemorating the Hussite movement.
The discussion surrounding the renaming of Koněvova Street has spanned more than three decades, and despite potential administrative challenges, the symbolic value of the change was deemed paramount. Prague 3 has made efforts to facilitate the transition for street residents and stakeholders.
Residents of Hartigova Street have a six-month grace period to exchange their identification cards, with the deadline set for the end of March 2024. Vehicle owners are also required to replace their small technical certificates, which can be accomplished during special office hours at the vehicle registry office in Jarov. Importantly, both the ID card exchange and the minor specialized certificate replacement are provided free of charge.
Prague 3 has embarked on an information campaign to support residents and stakeholders during this transition. Practical information and guidance are available on the district’s website, categorized by different life situations (residents, business owners, vehicle owners, foreigners). A toll-free helpline, 800 163 163, has also been established to offer further assistance.
In the coming weeks, Prague 3 plans to install signs with QR codes at bus stops along Hartigova Street, providing easy access to the district’s information website. Additionally, informational video spots will be displayed in Žižkov’s Aero and Přítomnost cinemas before screenings. The community is also working on offering a virtual guided tour, allowing visitors to explore Karel Hartig’s legacy.
The renaming of Koněvova Street to Hartigova Street signifies a pivotal moment in Prague’s urban development, highlighting the importance of symbols and celebrating local identity. As the community embraces this new chapter, it remains dedicated to preserving its heritage while forging a vibrant future.
