Prague Airport Continues to Reduce Emissions Adding 15 Electromobiles in Its Fleet

Pursuing its sustainable development strategy, Prague Airport has long been striving to reduce its carbon footprint, by using electric cars alongside other things. As many as fifteen electromobiles were thus added to the airport fleet this week, and the number is to be matched again next year. Of this year’s fifteen vehicles, five are intended for carsharing, the rest will be used in various airport operational departments.

“The new electric airport vehicles cause three times less CO₂ emissions than, for example, a car with a petrol engine and, above all, zero emissions at the place of electric cars’ operation. Given that Prague Airport plans to cover 100 percent of its electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2030, even electric cars will refuel with electricity with zero CO₂ emissions. In 2023, it will be at least 72 percent green electricity,” Soňa Hykyšová, Prague Airport Director in charge of Environment Protection, said.

Achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 is a long-term goal of Prague Airport. Therefore, since 2012, it has implemented a number of cost-saving projects, including lighting replacements, installation of new boilers, optimisation of air conditioning unit operations, and more. Effective 2019, the airport also covers its own electricity consumption from renewable sources, purchasing green electricity and, starting in 2022, from its own photovoltaic power plant, the operations of which will be launched at Terminal 3. In 2021, Prague Airport carbon footprint was reduced by 72.5 percent compared to 2009. Moreover, airport decarbonisation is one of the main pillars of the company’s ESG strategy.
