On Thursday, Prague firefighters were called to the scene of an oil spill on the Vltava River near the Štefánikova Bridge and the Helmovský Weir. The oil slick, measuring approximately 50 meters by 50 meters, posed a significant environmental threat. Firefighters promptly took action to prevent the spread of the oil slick by deploying sorption booms.

The source of the oil spill is still under investigation by the police, as stated by Martin Kavka, a spokesperson for the firefighters. Determining the cause of such incidents can be a complex process and requires thorough investigation, as emphasized by Richard Hrdina, a police spokesperson.

Collaborating with environmental workers and the Vltava River Basin Authority, the firefighters have implemented measures to address the spill. Thirteen sorption booms have been installed on the river’s surface to contain the oil and prevent further spread. These booms will remain in place until the evening, ensuring continuous containment efforts.
