Prague inaugurates (on March 6) trolleybus line to and from airport

After the opening of line 58, it is the turn of line 59. On Wednesday 6 March 2024 Prague trolleybus line 59 will be opened to the public, completely replacing line 119, which runs from the Veleslavín railway station to Prague Airport “Václav Havel”. The diesel buses will be replaced by the battery-powered Škoda-Solaris 24m trolleybuses.  The trolleybus will run as far as Terminal 3, while Terminal 1-2 will be reached in battery mode.

The first operating schedule is to run every 3 to 4 minutes until 7 p.m. when the frequency will change to 5 minutes, around 8 p.m. the runs will be every 8 minutes and 10 minutes after 9 p.m.

Line trials began on 31 January 2024 with a test trolleybus, a Skoda 24 Tr taken from Pilzen in 2020. On 1 February 2024, car 405, the third of 20 double-articulated trolleybuses ordered by DPP Prague, was used for testing. Car 403 started passenger service on line 58 on the Palmovka-Turnovka route for the approval of the entire series.

The maxi-bus will accommodate up to 179 passengers, 52 of whom will be seated, and accessibility is ensured by five double doors

On 1 February 2024, line 58, which connects Palmovka with Miskovice, was put into service, replacing car line 140.Currently, operation is still mixed with buses as only seven of the fifteen SOR TNS 18s have been delivered, whose deliveries started in July 2023 and are expected to be completed shortly.

The service on route 58 runs from 5 a.m. to midnight, with passes every 4 to 5 minutes during peak hours and every 10 minutes during off-peak hours, Saturdays and holidays every 15 minutes, in the evenings it runs every 20 minutes. By 2025, a third car line, 137, is to be converted to a trolleybus line, which will be reclassified as trolleybus line 52.
