Prague Planetarium Cancels Tender for New Projection System, Announces New One

The Prague Planetarium is set to undergo significant renovations as it replaces its outdated projection system with new LED technology at a cost of up to CZK 300 million. However, the tender for the new system had to be cancelled due to objections from one of the participating companies. According to Dominika Simónaková, a spokesperson for the Observatory and Planetarium of the City of Prague, the planetarium’s reconstruction schedule will not be affected. The larger part of the planetarium in Stromovka will be closed to visitors for about a year from May 14th, but the exhibition in the foyer, the simulatorium underground, and the gift shop will remain accessible if possible. Workshops for schools will also continue.

The new projection system will feature 45 million diodes distributed throughout the dome, providing high contrast images and lower maintenance costs, with a lifespan of 25 years. The entire hall, including the stage and seating area, distribution, air conditioning, and heating system, will also be reconstructed. The Stefanik Observatory on Petrin Hill and the Observatory in Dablice will remain operational during the renovation.

The Prague Planetarium is among the 50 largest in Europe, having opened in 1960. It offers astronomy courses and clubs, as well as programs for the public and schools. The Stefanik Observatory was launched in 1928, and the Observatory in Dablice in the 1950s, and they all fall under the Observatory and Planetarium of the City of Prague.

Although the tender had to be cancelled, the planetarium’s spokesperson assured the public that the work was not at risk and that the results of the new tender would be announced during the summer holidays. With the new technology and upgraded facilities, the Prague Planetarium will continue to offer exciting and educational programs to the public for many years to come.
