Prague Unveils Ambitious Plan for Reconstruction of Iconic Libeň Bridge in 2026

The city of Prague has unveiled an ambitious plan for the comprehensive reconstruction of the historic Libeň Bridge, set to commence in 2026. Spanning 1200 meters between Palmovka and Maniny, the bridge will undergo a transformative process that involves replacing a significant portion with a meticulously crafted “replica” based on the original design by architect Pavel Janák. The decision to build anew is driven by contemporary traffic demands and the imperative for an extended lifespan, while preserving the original pillars will be a focal point of the reconstruction.

In addition to revitalizing the bridge’s visual aesthetics, the proposal introduces a promising array of new public services. Prague’s deputy for transport, Zdeněk Hřib, envisions the creation of cafes, shops, and various services beneath the bridge. The redevelopment plan also explores innovative approaches to riverfront utilization, enhancing the bridge’s connectivity and community engagement.

The estimated cost of the ambitious reconstruction project is set at 2.1 billion korunas. According to Jozef Sinčák, the head of TSK (Technical Road Administration), the anticipated cost is not expected to undergo significant changes based on the updated study. The financial commitment underscores the city’s dedication to modernizing critical infrastructure while preserving historical elements that contribute to Prague’s architectural heritage.

Constructed in 1928, the Libeň Bridge, linking the neighborhoods of Holešovice and Libeň, has weathered nearly a century without substantial repair. The state of disrepair, shared by some other bridge constructions in the capital, emphasizes the urgency and necessity of the proposed reconstruction. The project represents a holistic approach to urban development, blending architectural restoration with contemporary functionality to create a renewed landmark that meets the evolving needs of the city and its residents.
