On September 23rd each year, Saudi Arabia celebrates its National Day, a momentous occasion marking the unification of the kingdom by King Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1932. This day, known as “Al-Yaom Al-Watany,” is more than a public holiday; it is a day that embodies the rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and national pride of Saudi Arabia.

H.E. Abdullah Muteb A. ALRASHEED invited on this occasion the representatives of the diplomatic corps, the Czech Government, members of the Saudi Arabian community in Czechia, and friends of Saudi Arabia to celebrate this day.

A colorful program with folklore entertainment were part of the program. Besides delicious Arabian food has been served.

The history of Saudi Arabia’s National Day dates back to the early 20th century. Prior to its unification, the region was divided into several emirates. However, under the visionary leadership of King Abdulaziz, the modern-day Kingdom of Saudi Arabia emerged. He embarked on an arduous campaign to unify the disparate tribal regions and formed the nation-state, officially proclaimed as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on September 23, 1932.

On this day, Saudis across the nation engage in a series of activities that reflect both the traditional and modern spirit of the country. The streets and public buildings are adorned with the national colors—green and white—and the flag of Saudi Arabia waves proudly, emblazoned with the shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith.

National Day is marked by various events that bring communities together in celebration. Public and private sectors organize festivities that include cultural exhibitions, musical performances, fireworks, and patriotic displays. Traditional dance performances, such as the Ardah, showcase the rich cultural legacy of the kingdom. This traditional sword dance is performed to the rhythm of drums and poetry, highlighting the deep-rooted customs of the Saudi people.

The day is a public holiday, offering families an opportunity to convene and celebrate. Parks, open spaces, and commercial areas become arenas of joy and festivity, with local cuisine and traditional Saudi delicacies like kabsa and jareesh shared among family and friends.

Moreover, National Day is a time for reinforcing national unity and encouraging the spirit of citizenship among the citizens. The youths especially are encouraged to engage with their community and partake in activities that highlight national cohesiveness.

As a nation with a strategic political and economic position in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia’s National Day also has geopolitical significance. It represents not only an internal celebration but is a reminder of the kingdom’s role on the global stage.

The government plays an instrumental role during the National Day. Declarations from the king and other members of the royal family often emphasize themes of unity, religious devotion, and national progress. These messages serve to inspire the populous and reiterate the importance of the roles citizens play in achieving the country’s long-term goals.
