Shindisi: A Tale of Courage and Humanity Amidst the 2008 Russia-Georgia Conflict
On September 24, the Ambassador of the Republic of Georgia, H.E. Tea Maisuradze, hosted a film screening at the Prague City Library, attended by numerous representatives of the diplomatic corps.
The film “Shindisi” was shown.
The film, directed by Dito Tsintsadze, is based on true events that occurred during the five-day clashes between Russia and Georgia in August 2008. The film is named after the village of Shindisi, which became the setting for an extraordinary story of courage and humanity. Amid the chaos of the warlike conflict, ordinary villagers offered their help to Georgian soldiers caught in a deadly ambush, risking their own lives. This selfless act serves as the heart of the story and highlights the indomitable spirit and solidarity of the Georgian people.
In 2008, Georgia witnessed a conflict that would forever shape the small Caucasian country. The Russian invasion of Georgia is a dark chapter in the region’s history, and the Georgian film “Shindisi” brings the harrowing yet heroic events of that time to the screen in a striking way.

Geopolitical tensions in the region led to an escalating military conflict in August 2008. Russia invaded in response to Georgian efforts to restore control over the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia’s swift and decisive response surprised many and led to a massive international outcry. Despite military inferiority, Georgia showed great resolve to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Internationally, Russian aggression was widely condemned, and numerous nations voiced their support for Georgia.
“Shindisi” secures a prominent place in the pantheon of Georgian cinema by illuminating not only the horror and cruelty of war, but also the indomitable courage and humanity of the people who refuse to bow to the darkness. The film embodies a deep appreciation for life, honor and community, managing to draw the viewer almost imperceptibly into the midst of the drama of unfolding events. Tsintsadze’s direction, along with authentic performances and a striking cinematic backdrop, underscores the subtle, emotional narratives – a powerful reminder of the brave souls who stood tall in the face of conflict and injustice.
Debuting at the 2019 Warsaw International Film Festival and further sharing on global platforms, “Shindisi” found a wide audience and captured numerous hearts. It was selected as Georgia’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, reflecting international interest and recognition.
Georgia, a country with a long history of resistance, once again testifies to its strength and integrity through “Shindisi.” The film is a boldly drawn testament to unity and fellow support in times of great need. By telling a moving human narrative, Azubijan reminds us that people’s everyday courage remains a defining force for futures and healing beyond geopolitical conflict. Thus, “Shindisi” stands as an impressive testimony to the unbroken Georgian spirit and remains an inspiration for hope and unity in times of conflict.
