The Financial Administration records CZK 1.5 billion in road tax overpayments

The Financial Administration records more than CZK 1.5 billion overpayments in road tax advances. The overpayments arose after an amendment to the law that limited the range of vehicles for which the road tax was paid.

The tax administration on Tuesday advised taxpayers to apply for a refund of the overpayment. After six years, the right to a refund will expire.

This year’s amendment to the law abolished road tax for cars, buses, and trucks up to 12 tonnes. At the same time, the tax rate for trucks and trailers over 12 tonnes has been reduced. The government amended the law in response to rising fuel and energy prices.

The tax administration advises road taxpayers to check with the relevant tax office electronically whether they have overpaid.

“Overpayments of road tax can be refunded based on a request for refund of the overpayment filed with the tax administrator in their local jurisdiction,” Jan Ronovský, deputy director general of the Tax Administration, said in a press release.

The tax administrator has 30 days to process the request. If the taxpayer does not request a refund of the overpayment within six years, the right to the refund expires.
