The Return of ‘The Vision of St. Luitgarda’ to Charles Bridge

On the morning of May 28, 2024, Prague’s iconic Charles Bridge welcomed back the beloved sculpture ‘The Vision of Saint Luitgarda’ (Sen svaté Luitgardy) after a four-year absence. Removed in June 2020 due to structural repairs on the bridge pillar where it was mounted, the sculpture had been securely housed in the depository of the Gallery of Prague (GHMP) during the restoration period. Despite the rainy weather, the reinstallation process was completed smoothly, much to the delight of locals and tourists alike.

‘The Vision of St. Luitgarda’ is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful sculptures on Charles Bridge. Created in 1710 by renowned Czech sculptor Matthias Bernard Braun, the original sculpture graced the bridge until 1996. Due to its deteriorating condition, it was then moved to the National Museum’s lapidarium to ensure its preservation. In its place, a replica made in 1995 by sculptors Jiří Novák and Borživoj Rák has stood since 1996, continuing to capture the admiration of those who visit the historic bridge.

The return of this exquisite piece of art is more than just a restoration of a sculpture; it symbolizes the ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate Prague’s rich cultural heritage. The meticulous care taken to repair the bridge and the thoughtful reinstallation of the sculpture underscore the city’s commitment to maintaining its historical landmarks.

Charles Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is not just a vital thoroughfare connecting the Old Town with the Lesser Town but also an open-air gallery of Baroque statues. The reinstallation of ‘The Vision of St. Luitgarda’ reaffirms the bridge’s status as a focal point of artistic and historical significance in Prague. The sculpture itself depicts a mystical vision experienced by Saint Luitgarda, a Cistercian nun, and is considered one of Braun’s masterpieces for its intricate detail and expressive composition.

This event marks a moment of cultural celebration for Prague, as the beloved statue returns to its rightful place, continuing to inspire and enchant those who cross the historic bridge. The preservation and maintenance of such artifacts are crucial for future generations to appreciate the rich tapestry of Prague’s history and artistic legacy.
