UN Member States examined the human rights situation in the Czech Republic

On Monday, 23 January 2023, the fourth Universal Periodic Review of the Czech Republic took place at the United Nations in Geneva. More than 90 countries from around the world participated in the meeting.

This was the fourth universal periodic review (UPR), an intergovernmental mechanism examining human rights situations, of the Czech Republic. The previous reviews took place in 2017, 2012 and 2008. The Czech delegation was led by the Government Commissioner for Human Rights Klára Šimáčková Laurenčíková. Other members of the delegation were representatives of the Office of the Government and the Ministries of Labour and Social Affairs, Justice, Education, Youth and Sports, Interior, Foreign Affairs, Health and Environment.

States commended the Czech Republic for its aid to the Ukrainian refugees and national action plans on human rights. Most of the recommendations focused on the eradication of discrimination and hate speech against minorities with emphasis on Roma and migrants, protection of women including the ratification of the Istanbul Convention and improving the compensation for unlawful sterilisation of women, legalisation of same-sex marriage and aiding refugees and asylum seekers. Other recommendations emphasized the need to establish a national human rights institution and strengthen the role of the Ombudsman. Several states recommend a change in the criminal definition of rape.

The Human Rights Council will adopt a report from the Czech Republic review on Friday 27 January. The Czech Republic will address all recommendations before June. The Council will subsequently adopt the final report at its 53rd Session in the Summer 2023.
