Today is a national holiday in Japan, so called. Adult Day, which aims to celebrate and encourage fresh adults to live a life for which they take responsibility. Young people participate in festive events with speeches, cultural program and photos. For this occasion, they let themselves be professionally dressed in traditional clothes, girls usually in so-called. furisode, which is a kimono with typical long sleeves. This year furisodes are said to be popular after mom or grandma. The previous generations could afford a more luxurious, better quality kimono, whose use is also in line with the current sustainability trend.
In 2022, the law came into force, reducing the age limit for coming of age by two years from 20 to 18 years. Japan is 1st this year. 1. 2023 a total of 1 million 120 thousand new adults, but most of the local governments, which have official celebrations in their competence, decided to invite just twenty-year-olds so far. The reason is that the younger ones are busy with entrance exams or interviews these days. Only three cities will host a ceremony for the younger ones this year, but on three different dates.
And what actually changed with moving the age limit for adulthood, which has been valid since 1876? Eighteen-year-olds can drive a car since 1919, vote since 2014 and from 1. in April 2022, among other things, they can conclude all contracts themselves and enter into marriages without parents’ permission. On the contrary, until 20 they are still not allowed to smoke, drink alcohol, gamble, adopt children and drive trucks or buses.
