World concert tour to mark the 100th anniversary of Marie Callas’ birth has its stop in Prague
The Prague Chamber Philharmonic will pay tribute to the opera diva together with Vojtěch Dyk, conducted by Oleg Caetani. Maria Callas, a name that still resonates in the music and opera worlds. This December marks exactly 100 years since the birth of this Divine Wonder, who has conquered the world’s greatest and most important opera houses with her singing and acting talents. To mark the occasion, a world tour called CALLAS 100 is currently underway, bringing the opera tic diva back to the stage. The first concerts took place in Italy and were still hosted by Florence, Tarent and Vicenza. The upcoming stops are Milan, Prague, New York and Vienna. The unique theatrical-concert program will be presented in Prague at the Municipal House, headed by the important Italian conductor Oleg Caetani Prague Chamber Philharmonic and Vojtěch Dyk, together with the Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, the Italian tenor Marco Berti and the Hungarian mezzo-soprano Andrea Edina Ulbrich. The only concert in the Czech Republic will take place on 1 November in the Smetana Hall of Prague’s Municipal House. Tickets are already available, on the GoOut network.
The CALLAS 100 project is a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the birth of singer Marie Callas, who in her lifetime became literally a superstar of the opera scene. She was distinguished from her contemporaries primarily by her acting talent, and her charisma gained her popularity with the audience. She has become immortal through her extraordinary artistic talents and performances on stage, and even after a century, her personality has attracted her to concert halls and halls.
.Maria Callas has reaped success and recognition around the world throughout her career. In her life, artistic success interspersed with worldwide popularity and huge media interest. Divine Callas made history as an overlooked style icon and rightly appeared on the list of the world’s ten most elegant women in the late 1960s. Legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein said she “was undoubtedly the greatest dramatic singer of our time.” The spectacular musical-theatre experience will be able to be experienced by the audience in 2023, in the Smetana Hall of the Municipal House on the first day of November.
Callas 100, an international project, is conducted under the direction of Italian production. ‘We tried to keep the centenary celebrations of Marie Callas simple, but we’re building them in the process on artistic perfection. We decided to complete the traditional format of the classical gala concert, with the participation of top international artists, with scenic text, created directly for the event, and based on authentic Marie Callas documents such as her letters. The spoken word, which will be taken on by the leading actors of each country where the project is presented, will be complemented by musical compositions reminiscent of the singer’s most famous arias and roles. In this way, the character of Marie Callas approaches the audience and its human dimension. Moreover, the CALLAS 100 project is conceived internationally from the outset, hence the opening Italian leg of the tour will be followed by another trio of performances that will take place in legendary classical music halls. On the evening of November 1st we will perform in Prague’s legendary Smetana Hall, on December 3rd in New York’s famed Carnegie Hall and conclude the whole tour on December 20th in the traditional Vienna Musikverein,” his producer Davide Cicchetti brings up the idea of a memorial tour.
The Czech concert will be directed by italian conductor Oleg Caetani, who is one of the greatest conductors of his generation. He has accumulated experience around the world from La Scala to the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, from the Royal Opera House in London to the Opera House in San Francisco, from Lincoln Center in New York to the Musikverein in Vienna. He also worked with the greatest contemporary soloists and performers. In Prague, he will stand before members of the Prague Chamber Philharmonic, which will be accompanied by important opera soloists with experience in opera scenes from around the world – Poland’s Aleksandra Kurzak, Italy’s Marco Berti and Hungary’s Andrea Edina Ulbrich. There can be no missing personality who seizes the role of storyteller and takes his colleagues on stage, and the audience in the auditorium, through the whole concert. For this occasion, actor and singer Vojtěch Dyk was approached, who, even in his own creation, manages to combine both acting and a musical career at the highest level.

Maria Callas was a Greek-born opera singer, one of the most famous sopranos of the 20th century. She was born on 2 December 1923 in New York, died on 16 September 1977 in Paris. She controlled her three-octave voice with complete ease in all positions. She was born a U.S. citizen, but renounced her U.S. citizenship in 1966 and accepted the citizenship of Greece, her parents’ country of origin. Over the course of her career, she has conquered the audience of the biggest opera scenes, her talents not only musical but also acting, thus enchanting audiences around the world.
