Sona Polak, representing the Culture Ministry, revealed a significant shift in the attitudes of young Czechs towards ethnic and national minorities. According to a recent survey conducted by the Czech Council for Children and Youth (CRDM), which sampled 1,000 individuals aged 15 to 29, there has been a marked increase in tolerance among young people compared to the attitudes observed in 2020.
The survey, focusing on attitudes towards various minority groups including ethnic, national, religious, and sexual minorities, highlighted a considerable decrease in the percentage of respondents expressing discomfort with having minority neighbors. Notably, the figures demonstrate a substantial decline in the aversion towards Roma individuals, Muslims, and immigrants in general.
While a significant proportion of respondents still express reservations about certain groups, such as alcoholics or drug users, the survey indicates a growing acceptance of these individuals within the community. The findings suggest that despite persisting stereotypes, there is a trend towards greater inclusivity and empathy among young Czechs.
Furthermore, the survey sheds light on the perception of social exclusion faced by minority groups within Czech society. A majority of respondents expressed concern over the marginalization of various demographics, including former prisoners, immigrants, and individuals with psychological disorders. This awareness underscores a growing consciousness among young people regarding the importance of social inclusion and equity.
Moreover, the survey highlights specific areas where respondents believe intervention is necessary to address societal inequalities. While there is widespread agreement on the need to support individuals with disabilities and mental health issues, there is less consensus on prioritizing the inclusion of immigrants, ethnic minorities, and former prisoners. Nonetheless, a significant proportion of respondents acknowledge the importance of promoting inclusivity across diverse communities.
These findings not only reflect the evolving social landscape in the Czech Republic but also underscore the imperative for policymakers to prioritize initiatives aimed at fostering inclusivity and combating discrimination. As the younger generation emerges as torchbearers of progressive values, there is hope for a more inclusive and equitable society in the years to come.
